Middlebury residents win at karate competition

Published: Wednesday, August 4, 2004 1:50 PM CDT
The United Fighting Arts Federation (UFAF) held it's 25th Anniversary Celebration and World Championship this past weekend in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The celebration and competition were open to all Chun Kuk Do members with over 450 participants in the seminars and tournament. Actor Chuck Norris, founder of UFAF and Chun Kuk Do, was honored at the banquet held on Saturday night and was on hand to present awards to UFAF Hall of Fame Inductees Ken Gallacher, Howard Jackson, Tip Potter, Chip Wright and Bob Wall. He was also in attendance at the competition and presented awards to all of those who placed in and won the grand championships.

Presti Karate, a Chun Kuk Do karate school in Corning, N.Y., had four representatives attend this year's convention bringing home five world titles. Presti Karate's Corning location opened in February of this year at the Local 1000 Union Hall. They currently have 25 students with classes for Pre-Karate (ages 3-6), Juniors (6-11) and Adults (12 and up).

Leading the school in the competition was school owner and instructor Mari Bliss. Bliss had an impressive showing in both of her events winning 1st in Fighting and 2nd in Kata. Following her was Mike Cannon, of Middlebury Center winning 3rd in kata. Joey Parsons, a 9-year-old from Middlebury, won 1st in Kata and 3rd in fighting. This was Parsons' first competition and he was the lowest ranking competitor in his divisions. Jane Dixon, also of Middlebury, had a notable presentation in her kata competition and an exciting performance in fighting. Dixon competed in a younger and more challenging division and ultimately lost her contest to the winner of the competition in an impressive 4 to 2 point match. Others from Presti Karate's Niagara Falls, location placed in the competition as well.

We would like to congratulate all Presti Karate students who won or placed in this prestigious world championship tournament. For more information on this school call Mari Bliss at (607) 962-5817.
