A successful self-esteem building program that has been in effect in the Wellsboro High school since fall of 2002 will soon begin programming in the Rock L. Butler Middle School.

Project: Inside Out, a local 501 ( c ) ( 3 ) organization, will be presenting two assemblies, called "Freedom to Be Me" on Jan. 28.

According to program founder and life coach, Kate Sholonski of Wellsboro, the purpose of the assemblies is to introduce middle school students to concepts and principles of Inside Out such as feeling confident with who they are, appreciating their own uniqueness rather than comparing themselves to peers, and compromising themselves in order to "fit in."

"I want kids to be excited about who they are and enjoy living in a state of freedom rather than fear of being judged or trying to be like someone else," Sholonski said. "I believe when this occurs, students will naturally become less competitive and judgmental."

In follow up to the assemblies, brown bag lunch sessions will be available to the first 20 students from each grade that apply, and have obtained parental permission.

These twice-monthly sessions, held during scheduled lunch periods for each grade, will continue to build on the student's learning to appreciate themselves as well as the differences in others.

Numerous high school students that have been members of Inside Out will join Sholonski in mentoring the younger students.

Board members, Molly Bailey, Connie Shaw, Deb Bastian and Sholonski are grateful to the Sweet Foundation for making this middle school pilot program possible.

If you would like to financially support the work of Project: Inside Out, your tax deductible donation can be sent to Project: Inside Out, 34 Fischler St. Wellsboro, Pa. 16901.

Parents are welcome to contact Sholonski for more information regarding Project: Inside Out at (570) 723-1020 or may check their web site www.projectinside out.org.

The deadline for parental consent forms distributed to middle school students to be returned to the school guidance office is Feb 8.

The high school program remains active and growing and begins its sixth semester with a new group of students on Jan. 29. The kick off to the 13 weeks of group coaching sessions begins with an outdoor ropes course, under the direction of Rebecca Reese.

Custom designed educational programs to meet the needs of businesses are also included in the services of Project: Inside Out.
