Local bicycle race team gearing up despite the weather*
There may be snow on the ground and ice on the ponds, but that isn't stopping area bicycle enthusiasts from preparing for the season ahead.
They are bundling up for training rides in the sub-freezing temperatures and pedaling indoors with their bikes propped up on stands called "trainers." It's a regimen bike racers have dedicated themselves to for years, following the adage that June races are won in January.
But this year in the Northern Tier there is a bit more anticipation of the upcoming cycling season than usual. The excitement is due in part to the formation of a new team, the Oswald Cycle Works Race Team.
Formed by Tom Oswald, owner of Oswald Cycle Works bicycle shop in Mansfield, the team will have about a dozen members participating in both mountain bike and road races throughout Pennsylvania and New York. Their main focus, however, will be events in the Twin Tiers region, with special emphasis on local races like Wellsboro's Laurel Flyer Road Race and the Laurel Classic Mountain Bike Challenge.
While bicycle racing can appear to be an individual sport, team tactics and cooperation are often deciding factors in the outcome of a race. Riders can work together to set up a teammate for a break away or a strong sprint finish, or even to block or disrupt the efforts of a rival team. A team can also help its riders with training by organizing group training rides, and aid the in the logistics and cost of getting to races.
Some local cyclists, like Jason Fletcher, Jim Hepp, Tom Oswald, Matt Potter, and Dr. Jared Schneider have already had notable success in regional competition. Racing as part of the newly formed team will help them to improve upon those results, while also promoting bicycling as a fun and healthy activity, and providing positive exposure for local businesses sponsoring the team.
Sponsors of the team include Accounting With Attitude, Citizens and Northern Bank, Laurel Health System, Loomis Powder Coating, The Native Bagel, Oswald Cycle Works, and Strohecker Vision Care. Sponsorship funds will be used to help finance team uniforms and to pay travel expenses and race entry fees for select events.
Some members of the team will be competing on bicycles hand made by Oswald at his shop in Mansfield. Team members will not only participate in races, but also volunteer at area bicycle events, and write race reports to be posted on the team's website.
