Blossburg would lease land, no drilling at park
by Jason Przybycien
Potential Marcellus Shale gas under Island Park is a valuable commodity, and the Blossburg Borough Council intends to sell it. But, the council does not want drilling rigs on the football field or otherwise disturbing the park visually.
This was the consensus at their regular meeting July 14. For the full story, see page 13-A.
Also at the meeting:
* Mayor John Backman said the Island Park cannon's wheels are in Vicksburg for a refit, and they should be finished in four months. The initial bid for a concrete mount for the cannon came in at $5,000, so the borough will seek a cheaper alternative.
* Blossburg Borough Police Cpl. Josh McCurdy reported that a resident's outdoor wood burner had been shut down, the first enforcement of the new burning ordinance. He said someone complained about the smoke, and the burner owner was heating their water with the unit since they did not have natural gas.
