Break-down snarls traffic in Wellsboro

Published: Wednesday, January 7, 2009 8:05 PM CST
Charges are pending against a Ulysses man, following a vehicular breakdown that snarled Wellsboro traffic for hours.

According to Wellsboro Police Chief Thomas Young, a truck and trailer unit loaded with wood chips was traveling west on East Avenue Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 6. The load was on its way to a pellet factory in Ulysses.

Near the intersection with Bacon and Cone streets, the trailer failed and came to a halt. That created a traffic snarl that lasted for hours, said Young.

Police, assisted by the Wellsboro Fire Department volunteers and the fire police, were on the scene from shortly after 5 p.m. until after midnight. The trailer was unloaded by hand and the wood chips were transferred to another vehicle for removal from the scene. The equipment that failed was shored up and made road worthy so that it could also be removed.

Traffic citations are pending against the owner of the pellet factor, Luke Watson of Coudersport, Young added.
