Max E. Mickey

Max E. Mickey, 78, of Wellsboro, passed away peacefully at home Wednesday, April 15, 2009, with his loved ones at his side. 

Born on April 3, 1931, in Ligonier, he was the son of the late Dorcas Dorothy Wolford Mickey and Joseph Clark Mickey.

Max attended undergraduate and graduate studies at Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio, where he was a member of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity. He later attended the University of Pennsylvania School of Physical Therapy, as well as the Columbia School of Hospital Administration.  Max established the Physical Therapy Department at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital in 1958 and worked in the physical therapy and vocational rehabilitation fields for more than 30 years.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Alice Carlson Mickey; son, John Mickey and his wife Brenda of Little Compton, R. I.; daughters Judy Mickey Watson of Enola, Ann Mickey Miller and husband Scott, also of Enola; six grandchildren,: Lauren, Sarah and Christopher Mickey, Andrew Watson, Max and Hannah Miller; a great-granddaughter, Emma Morrick; sister Roma Jo Thompson and husband Jan of Bridgewater, Va.; sister Carol Service and husband Jerry of Palm Coast, Fla.; brother Terry Mickey and wife Carol of Wellsboro; eight nieces and nephews and many friends.


Within the local community, Max was well known for his dedication to and rapport with, his patients and clients, as well as for his many church and civic activities.  Among his family and many friends, he was affectionately regarded as a master storyteller and creator of innovative, thrifty solutions for household engineering problems using a personally-developed methodology known as the “Mickey fix.”  An avid outdoorsman, Max enjoyed hunting, fishing and many other outdoor activities.  His hobbies included genealogy and writing poetry.

Visitation was held on Saturday, April 18, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Tussey-Mosher Funeral Home, a “Life Celebration Home,” 139 Main St., Wellsboro.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Friends of Laurel Health at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital.  www.lifecelebration.com.
