Next Monday, May 18, at 6:30 p.m., at the Wellsboro Community Center, 3 Queen Street, a meeting is being held by citizens concerned about the plan to draw 430,000 gallons per day of water from Pine Creek over a five-year period, until 2013, for use by Ultra Resources, Inc.

The Susquehanna River Basin Commission awarded a permit to Ultra Resources, Inc. of Englewood, Colo. on March 23, 2009, to use in fracking operations in the company’s search for natural gas in the Gaines/Watrous area. The project is titled “Marshlands Play Pine Creek Water Source,” Pike Township, Potter County.

Said Larry Harris of Sabinsville, “There are several of us who want to get the word out about the definite negative implications this has for the Pine Creek Watershed and for many businesses, landowners and the community as a whole.

“Anyone interested in discussing what we, as a unified community, can do about this issue should plan to attend Monday’s meeting.”

He continued, “One suggestion is that we get the Susquehanna River Basin Commission to rescind the present permit and approve a new permit authorizing Ultra Resources, Inc. to use only acid mine drainage water. There are sources of acid mine drainage water that are already being used by similar companies for similar purposes. Two companies are already extracting water from Tioga Lake for that purpose. The Tioga Lake water is polluted with acid mine drainage.

" I agree, they don't live here and we have to live with the outcome. Let them use the already polluted water. "

" 1%? That is not even within the flow data noise for the Pine Creek. So Pine Creek flows 43,000,000 gallons per day on average? "

" Once they mix the clean water with the fracking chemicals where will they put their toxic waste?

I heard of plans from investors that the next big money maker is water. When they contaminate our water supply they can come back and sell us water. "

" it ios still going to amount to a significant amount..and with the 5 year drought Pine and area watersheds are experiencing the gas companies will apetition for more water..
The Pennsylvania Wilds Initiative has been cast aside for the Gas companies..
much more profitable to the state than promoting tourism here..
and we probably will be stuck having to clean up the hundreds of open air water ponds created to hold the poisoned used hydro-fracturing water by the gas company while the DEP tries to enforce the reclamation by the gas companies..BTW they haven't figure out how to completely do that..
oh and what happens to our hunting legacy as our game lands and later state lands are being developed for gas welll head installation..
then the animals and wild will flee the areas being developed as the trucks rool in and finally the hydro fracturing creats the tremors that the animals can sense..like an earthquake..
yep..
better get your house on the market because if you are not a gas lease holder it will be worthless..
call your state rep,the governor and the NRA..
i bet somehow this will lead to gun control as the Governor proposed..no game ..who needs guns? and the gas companies get more land.. "

" Do you have any proof that gas companies have ever acted like that, much less that the ones involved with Tioga County have? The state of New York had the power to hold up all gas drilling until they complete an environmental impact study. You think Pennsylvania doesn't have that power? You didn't see them exercise a similar power when Chief was putting fracking water in the streams? They were shut down immediately until new rules came into effect, then forced to get a permit which the SRBC and DEP approved. Is it possible the scenario you predict will happen? Yes. Probable? No. "
