A bear found its way up a tree around 8:30 p.m. Monday night, June 30, in front of Subway on Main Street in Wellsboro.
Crowds of people watched from the sidewalk as the borough police, members of the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and the Game Commission worked to get the bear down safely.
Jacob Brink, 11, and Branden Enck, 10, said they saw the bear near Austin and Purple Streets just minutes before.
“It was walking right down Purple [Street]. It was huge,” said Brink.

" The bear probably died from all the tranquelizers they shot into it, not because of its "agressive tendencies" "

" killed because of his aggressivness???you could have sedated him and let him out into the wild. he didn`t hurt anyone. just sent the article to my children out of state and later saw the ..we killed him....sentence. how awful..can`t believe you KILLED HIM. "

" Of course it didn't have to be destroyed. The laziness of whoever was in charge prevailed. "

" It is sad this bear was destroyed. It said it was aggressive, but it walked right past my four neighbor boys and never once acted aggresive towards them. The boys were playing with a toy bow and arrow and had shot an arrow at it and it ran away! I understand it could have harmed one of them and possibly my son too if he had been out, but putting it in the woods further from town seemed better than destroying it! "

" I do not think the animal had to be destroyed. Bears will have aggresive tendencies if they feel threaten.. And with a several people watching my guess is he felt threaten! Shame on you. Just an easy way out! "

" The same thing happened in a suburb of rochester. Again it shows the appathy of the authorties in handling a simple solution. Leave it alone and it will go home. "

" I'd be agressive too, if somebody shot my bear behind out of a tree... I think the bear was needlessly destroyed, and somebody should have to answer for the decision to kill him. Might I suggest a folllow-up article with quotes from DCNR and Game Comission officials justifying this action? Just seems wrong
Editor's note: There is additional information in the July 8 issue plus the results of our online poll about the story. "

" Generally, when things of this nature happen, the animal is tranquilized and released in the wild. I dont understand why the bear was destroyed. "

" Thats cool. Im 58 years old+ I have never seen that kind wild life in Wellsboro. Not even in the late 60's "
Mike Ruffner wrote on Jul 9, 2009 4:18 PM:
" I just want to say that I stand behind the game commissions decision. What would everyone be saying if the bear had attacked their dog or cat or,God forbid their child,. The bear had already been relocated previously and still was a nuisance.. Its so easy to second guess a decision when you don't have to make it. "
