If you  happened to be in downtown Wellsboro last Friday and caught the heady aroma of a skunk, it wasn’t from a roadkill.

No, it came from one angry, wet, somewhat out-of-place but very much alive skunk.

Sometime mid-Friday morning, the black-and-white striped visitor wandered into the town pool for an illegal swim, said Pete Herres, executive director of Wellsboro Parks and Recreation Department. The animal timed its arrival for sometime after staff had checked the pool and adjusted the chemistry and before the opening at 1 p.m.

“We’ve had skunks in the park before, but we never had one in the water,” Herres said. “We weren’t sure ow to remove these things. It was a new experience.”

" just for the record my family found the skunk in the filter at packer park pool that fri. we arrived at one shortley after we were the only ones in the pool and found the skunk in the filter so we told the lifeguards about the situation. the pool was then closed for some time. this skunk episode was after the pool opened not before "
