The Mansfield Destroyers are gearing up for a playoff run in their inaugural season in the NYCBL. Mansfield closed out the regular season with four wins in the final week of competition.
After a dramatic win Monday night against Olean, the Destroyers earned a 3-1 home victory against Genesee on Tuesday.
Kyle Smith held the Rapids to just one run in a rain shortened five inning contest.
On offense, the Destroyers garnered six hits. A single by Tim Carroll in the third inning put Mansfield ahead. Walker put an insurance run across the plate the next inning with a single to left field that drove in Schmitt from second base.
The dark clouds that were threatening rain from the start of the game finally gave way in the fifth, bringing the on field action to an early conclusion.
The win lifted Mansfield to second place in the Western division standings.
Mansfield continued to play well through the final five games of the season. Thursday at home against league-leading Niagara, Mansfield dominated in a 5-0 win. Jake Spillane held the Power scoreless through six innings of work from the mound. Nick Colton came on in relief and gave Mansfield two solid innings from the mound. Brandon Lingenfelter and David Higginbotham split the final inning to close out the win for the Destroyers.
At the plate, Colton Evans had an impressive night, garnering three hits and two RBIs. Carrol added to the offense with a two hits and an RBI.
The Destroyers kept the good times rolling with a home sweep of Hornell in a double header Friday night.
Mansfield got to work early with seven runs between the first two innings. Michael Wein had a home run and led the team with three RBIs.
In the second game of the double header, Mansfield was leading 9-1 in the fourth before the game was called on account of darkness. The Destroyers concluded that game Sunday in the season finale against Hornell, earning a 9-8 victory before falling 3-13 to the Dodgers in the final game of the season.
The Destroyers began their playoff run Monday night with a home game against Olean. The score from this game and any other playoff games will be in next week’s paper.
