The Elkland Little League eight, nine and 10 year old softball team opened the Jackie West Memorial Softball Tournament with a dominant win against Wellsboro. On offense the girls had a strong outing putting a whopping 17 runs on the scoreboard.
On defense, Elkland was just as successful as they held Wellsboro to just four runs.
The win sent Wellsboro to the loser’s bracket, while Elkland advanced to the semi-final round where they met Tunkhannock on Tuesday, July 2.
Tunkhannock was coming off a 10-run win against Susquehanna County. Against Elkland, Tunkhannock’s strong offense wasn’t nearly as successful. It was a close game but Elkland’s solid defensive play held Tunkhannock to just four runs and helped Elkland earn a 5-4 victory. The win put Elkland in the Championship game Monday, July 8.
Meanwhile in the loser’s bracket Wellsboro earned a 10-9 victory against Susquehanna County to earn a spot in the loser’s bracket championship. Four days after falling to Elkland, Tunkhannock lost another one-run game, this time falling to Wellsboro 5-4.
The win crowned Wellsboro as the loser’s bracket champions and set up a rematch with Elkland in the championship game Monday, July 8.
