Trey Slawson

Northern Potter’s Trey Slawson goes up for two of his game-leading 19 points.

After a tough loss to Coudersport, Northern Potter head basketball Coach Derek Erway figured that his team needed a big win.

The Panthers traveled to Galeton Wednesday evening (Jan. 8), and rode home with a 61-20 victory over the Tigers, who fought hard all the way, but couldn’t keep up with the Panthers’ hot shooting.

Galeton took an early 2-0 lead, but NoPo scored the next 27 points, and led, 35-4, at the half, after taking a 19-2 lead after the first eight minutes. The Panthers enjoyed a 46-14 advantage after three periods.

The Panthers upped their overall record to 5-6, and 3-4 in conference play. Galeton is still seeking its first win of the season.

“It’s good to get back on track,” Erway commented after the final buzzer. The Panthers’ Trey Slawson led all scorers with 19 points, including a dozen in the first quarter. “We’re very pleased,” Erway added, commenting, “We’ve just got to do this every game.” For the winners, Carter Anderson tallied 11 points, including a trio of three-pointers.

While both teams nabbed plenty of steals, Galeton grabbed a large number of early offensive rebounds. Northern Potter had no need to match their rivals; they simply connected on more shots.

Northern Potter hosts Cameron County on January 16 (starting time has not been announced), and on January 20, visits Austin for a 7 p.m. start.
