The Cowanesque Valley Indians showed signs of pulling off their first win of the season Friday when they played Bucktail. The Bucks closed the door on the Indians’ dream though with a score in the fourth to seal a Bucktail victory.
The Indians offense was firing on all cylinders in the loss. Quarterback Seth Huyler completed 12 of his 21 passes for 158 yards and a touchdown. The Indians aren’t afraid to air the ball out. This leads to some big play opportunities like on Friday night when Huyler completed a pass to Taaj Dallas who broke free from defenders for a 45-yard touchdown. The 45-yard grab was one of two receptions for Dallas on the evening. Brandon Paul led the offense in reception with three for 64 yards. Kole Hurler also had three receptions for a total of 24 yards.
Matt Barber, who had another solid game for the Indians, had two receptions for 23 yards. But Barber’s biggest contribution came on the ground where he had eight carries for 104 yards and a touchdown. At one point Barber broke loose for a 52-yard carry, the longest run of the night for the Indians.
Seth Huyler was the second leading rusher for the Indians with 35 yards on nine carries. Owen Fitzwater added 24 yards on the ground on nine carries. And Taaj Dallas added to his solid night offensively with 20 yards on the ground.
On defense Owen Fitzwater led the Indians with 10 tackles. Barber nearly led the team on both sides of the ball, falling just behind Fitzwater with eight tackles.
The Indians will have their hands full this week when they travel to Sayre. But if the offense can continue to improve like they have thus far the Indians stand a good chance of finding their first win Saturday on the road.
