Tioga County Deputy Coroner Robert Gee identified the man who drowned last Wednesday afternoon at Nelson Falls as 57-year-old Gregory Bliss, of Tioga.

Bliss was pronounced dead at about 6:30 p.m. Gee, who investigated the tragic incident, ruled it an accidental drowning.

Gee said Bliss was swimming with friends near the waterfall about 5 p.m. when the undercurrent and turbulence swept him under and held him there. His friends were unable to find him or get to him for about five minutes. By that time it was too late to attempt resuscitation. Emergency personnel from Nelson, Lawrenceville, Valley Ambulance Association and the Army Corps of Engineers responded to the scene.

Nelson Falls is part of the Cowanesque River just west of the Cowanesque Lake, between Route 49 and Thornbottom Road.

This was the first drowning incident at either the Cowanesque or Hammond lakes.
