The old bell at Wellsboro High School is usually a symbol of jubilation, as the home teams ring it every time they enjoy a victory on the gridiron.

However, on Sunday, the bell instead prompted terror and concern.

According to Wellsboro School District Superintendent Chris Morral, the 35-year-old bell’s cast iron stand broke as the fifth and sixth grade Small Fry football team rang in their win against Canton.

CORRECTION: The article contained inaccurate information about the high school students honored in the memorial. Denise Baker was incorrectly named in the paper. She and Todd Antoine were running an errand, not going to dinner when the accident occurred and the vehicle went into Marsh Creek, not a pond. The Gazette apologizes to the families for the errors.
