The Coudersport Falcons boys basketball team continues their undefeated start to the season with a tight win over Johnsonburg by a score of 43-41 to move to 2-0 on the year.
Coudersport was the top team in their division last season, and put together a 24-3 season as well as a district championship and a state playoff berth. Coudersport made it to the second round of the state playoffs, before eventually falling to the runner up of the 2a state championships.
The Falcons faced one of their toughest games of the season against Johnsonburg and were forced to play from behind for a majority of the game.
At the half, the Falcons found themselves in a nine point hole, but came roaring back in the second half of play. Down 23-14, Coudersport outscored Johnsonburg by six points in the third by a count of 16-10 to narrow their deficit to three, but still had a lot of work to do if they wanted to come out with a win.
With the score at 33-30 heading into the fourth, Coudersport would need a spark to rally their offense further and received just that, and shot lights out from three-point range in the fourth. The Falcons knocked down three deep shots in the fourth and Kolby VanWhy was able to connect on a late three that extended the Falcons first lead of the half from one to four with a score of 41-37.
The Falcons were able to finish strong and close out the game 43-40 for their second win of the season.
Coudersport was led by leading scorer Hayden Keck, who continues to score in bunches as he netted 12 points in the win. Derek Easten scored eight points while VanWhy scored seven points and Dillon Keglovits had six points and 11 boards on the night.
Keck has started his season out on the right foot, and has scored double digit points in his first two games of the season and is currently averaging 19 points per game in the opening weeks of the year. Frame and Keglovits also have had hot starts to the year, with Frame averaging 11 points per contest and Keglovits adding eight points and over 11 rebounds per game to start the year.
Coudersport has had a tremendous start to their season, going 2-0 and beating Smethport handily by 49 points and just edging a solid Johnsonburg team in the final quarter. Coudersport returns to action against the Galeton Tigers on the road on Thursday, Dec. 19.
