Coudersport high school Principal Steve Mongillo reported to the school board that report cards have been sent out, and incomplete grades will be updated by the end of the week. He said when extended illnesses or other emergencies keep students out of school, an incomplete is issued. All incomplete work was due earlier this week.

He also said a group of students visited Alfred State University and also attended a college fair. In other recent events, the school musical was last week and he said he was very impressed with the students who were in it.

Elementary Principal Sean Reams reported that seven teachers went to Oswayo Valley to discuss OV’s math scores on standardized testing, as their scores have been consistently high.

Reams also said the school recently had parent/teacher conferences. He stressed it was important to get the parents in the school to have a conversation about their student, good or bad.

Superintendent Jackie Canter reported a school messenger alert was sent out recently with a school climate survey to be completed. She said she will send another before the end of the week around 5 p.m. for those who didn’t get it, or didn’t get the whole code they need for the survey.

The school board approved the hire of Kyle Gerhart as physics teacher, at a starting salary of $41,422, upon receipt of his Type 01 Emergency Permit. Megan Ambrose was appointed to the sixth grade musical director. Jeanne Morley was approved as a substitute teacher, Saralyn Keck was approved as a substitute school nurse.

A number of volunteers were approved as trap team coaches. The board also approved the trap team agreement with Galeton Area School District. Mongillo said a lot of students signed up.

The board authorized Canter to sign a memorandum of understanding with Mansfield University to participate in the Early Start Program. Any courses taken by students can’t replace courses offered by Coudersport, but rather supplement them.

The board approved the following field trips:

  • Eight enrichment students to travel to University of Pittsburg at Bradford on Nov. 17 for Model European Union High School Conference;
  • 15 agriculture education students to travel to the fire hall/bear check station on Nov. 20 to check in bears and learn about bear biology;
  • Six students, grades kindergarten through eighth, to travel to Smethport on Dec. 6 for a Geography Fair.

The next school board meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 3.
