ROULETTE — More than $2,000 was raised for domestic violence awareness this past weekend during the eighth annual Domestic Violence Awareness Weekend at the firehall here. All proceeds will go to A Way Out and the PA Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

David Shalkowski organizes the event every year in memory of his sister, Cheri Shalkowski Baker, who was a victim of psychological and verbal abuse and was killed by her estranged husband on July 13, 2008.

It began as a way “to help our family cope with the tragedy and to help shine a light on the hidden epidemic of domestic violence,” Shalkowski wrote in an email. “We have been hosting this event since the Roulette Township supervisors have approved to proclaim July 13 as Domestic Violence Awareness Day in 2012.”

The event started as a walk against domestic violence, Shalkowski said, but has grown over the past eight years to an entire weekend of fundraising.

Two things that Shalkowski saw a big increase in participation this year were the quarter bingo and the ice cream social. Thirty people signed up to walk the 5K, five people entered in each the chocolate dessert and barbecue sauce contests and 24 participants in the corn hole tournament.

For those who are or know of someone who is a victim of domestic violence, Shalkowski wants them to know they’re not alone.

“I want other victims and families of victims to know that they are not alone and together we can stomp out this epidemic,” Shalkowski said. “I know we all have a tendency to mind our own business, but taking a stand against domestic violence requires all of us not to ignore it. If you see it or hear it, report it.”
