ULYSSES — The Northern Potter Music Department will put on its production of “Once Upon a Mattress” at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 15 and Saturday, Nov. 16 in the Darlene J. Sitler Auditorium in Ulysses.
“Once Upon a Mattress” is a musical comedy based on the fairy tale “The Princess and the Pea.” Anna Very, director, said she was excited to select this musical because she was part of a production of it when she was in middle school. It’s a nice step up from “Seussical, Jr.,” which the department performed last year, she said, plus, it’s pretty funny.
Many of the same students who were involved last year are involved again this year, though a lot more elementary school students are participating this year. In total, Very said they have close to 50 students from fifth grade and up in the cast and crew, whereas last year they had around 30 students.
The cast began rehearsing in September. The crew worked on constructing the sets and painting the scenes and the cast worked on their singing, blocking and memorizing lines. The crew memorizes as much as they can on their own, then they run lines with someone else.
Very said the response to the production of “Seussical” last year showed her this is something the community is still very much interested in.
“It’s a really funny show, there are so many students involved and they’re having a really great time. It’s just going to be fun,” Very said. There will be a few references to the “Seussical” and there may be some Easter eggs for next year’s musical in “Once Upon a Mattress,” she said.
Tickets are $10 for general admission, $7 for students and seniors, and children under the age of five are free. Proceeds go toward next year’s musical. Tickets can be purchased at the door; doors open at 7 p.m.
