Coming into the new year, the Port Allegany and Coudersport girls shared top billing in the North Tier League basketball standings, setting up their Jan. 3 meeting at Coudy as an important early-season showdown.

Round 1 went to the Falcons, who took advantage of 25 Gator turnovers to roll to a 52-42 win to remain perfect in the league while handing Port its first NTL setback. Sarah Chambers (14 points), Roz Page and Mikayla Gunn (12 each), and Lauren Stimaker (nine) paced a balanced scoring attack for Coudy (6-1, 5-0 NTL), while the Gators were led by Barnett (17 points, five steals) and Bree Garzel (14 points, five rebounds), with Jade Evens contributing five boards and four blocked shots.

Port (7-2, 4-1 NTL) has a pair of varsity-only contests slated this week, hosting Oswayo Valley on Jan. 7 and traveling to Galeton on Jan. 9 for a 6:30 p.m. tipoff.

Next week: Northern Potter, Jan. 13; Cameron County, Jan. 17. The postponed Dec. 27 non-league game at Wellsboro has been rescheduled for Feb. 10.
