Sierra Archer

The inaugural Jean Marie Swanson Scholarship was awarded to Sierra Archer, who is attending Messiah College in Mechanicsburg as an English major.

Archer graduated from Port Allegany High School in May 2018. She is the daughter of Doug and Valerie Archer of Port Allegany.

Jean Marie Swanson was a business teacher at Port Allegany High School in the 1960s and ‘70s. She would later move to St. Marys, where she finished her teaching career. This scholarship, and a similar one in St. Marys, were recently awarded to students who graduated in 2018 at both schools. Swanson believed wholeheartedly in education, and worked very diligently to set these scholarships up as her legacy to future students.

Archer had to complete an application and write an essay detailing why she chose her field of study. All applications and essays submitted were read by a committee at Port Allegany High School, who selected her as the winner of the award.

This year’s scholarship award was $6,000. In April, seniors in the graduating class of 2019 will have an opportunity to apply for the Jean Marie Swanson Scholarship.
