On Sept. 30, following a one-day jury trial at the McKean County Courthouse, Mark Carlson of East Smethport was convicted of strangulation, aggravated assault, three counts of recklessly endangering another person (deadly weapon used), two counts terroristic threats (deadly weapon used) and simple assault.
The crimes stem from the defendant’s actions on April 6, 2018 in East Smethport.
Court records say Carlson had been drinking alcohol on the day of the incident and holding a machete when he threatened to kill a woman and her daughter. He also grabbed one woman by the throat and squeezed until she couldn’t breathe.
The charges were filed by Trooper Nicholas Anderson of the Pennsylvania State Police. Assistant district attorney Ashley Shade prosecuted the case on behalf of the commonwealth. Sentencing will occur in November.
