The Port Allegany girls kept up the pace in the four-way North Tier League race, earning double-digit wins over Galeton, Austin and Oswayo Valley in last week’s league action.

Instead of relying on one or two big scorers, it’s been a team effort for the Gators (8-1, 5-1), with Erin Stauffer (Galeton), Jenna Sprankle (Austin), and Cailey Barnett (OV) taking turns atop the stat sheet.

Stauffer’s 16-point performance at Galeton included a 10-for-16 night at the line, while Cierra Lannager dominated the glass with 15 rebounds and nine points.

“Both are playing like seniors should,” coach Jamie Evens wrote in an email to the Reporter Argus. “Cierra had to overcome missing most of last season with an injury, so she has really been behind most of the year and is starting to find her way. And we are finally starting to look for her on offense and that helps to open things up.”

Of Stauffer, he noted, “We were looking for another offensive option coming into the season and she has really stepped up, especially with her aggressiveness and getting to the line. Both of those two and Jenna are really providing the senior leadership a successful team needs.”

Cailey Barnett added 12 points and six rebounds against the Tigers, with Bree Garzel pulling down eight boards.

Sprankle (11), Barnett (10) and Stauffer (9) led a balanced attack against Austin, while the Gator defense blanked the Panthers in the second quarter to put the game out of reach. The story was similar in the Saturday matinee at OV, with the reserves seeing plenty of playing time as the Gators eased to the win behind Barnett (15 points, six rebounds, four steals), Garzel (nine points, five assists, three steals), and Sprankle (six points, six rebounds, three steals).

This week’s schedule features a game at Otto-Eldred, one of three other one-loss teams in the league, followed by a home game against Smethport on Thursday night.
