Kyle Babcock has been doing the math for a good chunk of the season, trying to figure out which combination of wins could get his Port Allegany boys basketball team into the postseason.

Now, with the schedule down to the final few games, the equation is simple: Win out, or else.

Smethport, which edged the Gators 48-47 in their first meeting, earned the sweep in the rematch with a 44-31 win at Port on Jan. 29. Layne Shall led all scorers with 15 for the Hubbers, with Howie Stuckey netting 10 for the Gators in a defensive struggle.

“Defensively, I thought we played decent in the first half. We held them to 13 points, but then they held us to 13,” Babcock said. “We were just sloppy on offense. A lot of bad shots, a lot of forced shots, and we missed a lot of layups. We just never got anything going.”

Two nights later, Coudersport strengthened its grip on another North Tier League championship, putting three players in double figures as they cruised past the Gators with a 67-38 win. The Falcons’ Travis Gleason scored 18 points in his return to the lineup, with Dillon Keglovits adding 17 and Hayden Keck 11. Ty Guilds led Port with nine.

The Gators (7-11, 6-7 NTL) close out the season with games against Oswayo Valley and Ridgway, a trip to Galeton, and next week’s Feb. 12 home finale against Northern Potter.
