Tioga County young women between ages 16 and 20 (as of June 1), will vie for the title of Tioga County Fair Queen.

The winner will represent the fair, receive $500, with an additional $500 scholarship from WOC Energy at the end of her reign, provided she has completed her reign in good standing.

If the queen has not yet graduated from high school, the Tioga County Fair will hold the scholarship money and will issue a check when the queen enrolls in a college, university or trade school.

The fair queen is eligible to represent Tioga County at the State Fair Queen Contest in Hershey in January 2020 and will receive a $250 gift card toward the purchase gowns or business attire for the state fair competition.

Winner of the state competition receives a scholarship of $2,500 and reigns as Pennsylvania’s Fair Queen for one year.

The Tioga County Fair Queen runner-up is awarded $200. If there is a second and third alternate, they will split the prize money.

Candidates must reside in Tioga County, must be single, never been married, have no children, and not marry or become pregnant during her reign. Past local or state winners are not eligible.

The winner must be available to reign at the Tioga County Fair, Aug. 5-10. The fair queen’s duties range from passing out ribbons and trophies to welcoming dignitaries visiting the Tioga County Fair.

Judging is based on an essay written in 300 words or less on “What My Fair Means to My Community.” Candidates will also be expected to present a 3-5 minute speech on the topic “Why You Should Come to My Fair.”

Applications for entry are in the fair books distributed at local banks and businesses, on the fair’s website, TiogaCountyFair.com. Mail entries to Courtney Smith, 71 Grinnell Lane, Liberty, PA 16930, with a postmark no later than July 19 and must include a brief autobiography on a 3 by 5 card, along with a recent photo.

Judging will be Aug. 4 at 1 p.m. Crowning of the 2019 Tioga County Fair Queen will take place the same day at 6 p.m. in the main building on the Tioga County Fairgrounds.
