Kendyl Mckissock

Kendyl Mckissock lines up a shot for the Lady Mounties during their game against West Chester on Saturday, Jan. 11.

Freshman Jasmine Hilton registered her first double-double of her young collegiate career, but her efforts were not enough as the Mansfield University women’s basketball team fell to West Chester University, 66-46 on Saturday, Jan. 11 inside Decker Gymnasium.

Hilton led the offense with a 14-point, 10 rebound double-double, while shooting 61 percent (6-of-10) from the field. Junior Paige Whitfield added seven points and two steals and freshman Jasmine Perez pulled in eight rebounds to go with six points and two steals. Freshman Alivia Paeglow had another good afternoon on the glass, hauling in six rebounds.

In the first quarter, the Mounties (3-12, 1-8 PSAC) came out of the gates hot and led 7-2 after three minutes of play. With both teams going cold over the next seven minutes of action, the Mounties clung to the early lead until a 6-0 run allowed the Golden Rams (5-9, 3-6 PSAC) to capture their first advantage of the game with one minute to go.

The second quarter nearly mirrored the first with West Chester outscoring the Mounties, 13-10. Hilton opened the period with a layup off a beautiful pass from junior Chelsea Cover and Paeglow got into the scoring action two possessions later to cut the Golden Rams lead to 14-13. West Chester extended their lead to nine at the 2:55 mark, but Perez made a layup in traffic and Cover dished out another assist to Whitfield to send the contest to the break with West Chester clinging on to a 25-19 advantage.

It was the third period where the Golden Rams started to create separation after going 10-of-20 from the floor, while holding the Mounties to 33 percent (4-of-12). West Chester started to create havoc with a full court press throughout the third period that led to 11 points off turnovers and outscored the Mounties 25-11.

The Mounties matched the Golden Rams with 16 points in the fourth quarter thanks to nine points between freshman Kendyl Mckissock, Bella Skatell, and sophomore Lily Soullaird.

Justyn Roberts led three Golden Rams in double-figures, netting 8-of-11 shots from the field in her 18-point, 8-rebound performance.

The Mounties are on the road all next week, beginning with a trip to Kutztown University on Wednesday, Jan. 15 at 5:30 p.m.WEST CHESTER 66, MANSFIELD 46
