Mounties women's soccer

The Mansfield University women’s soccer team fell short in their season finale against Lock Haven by a score of 2-1.

The women’s soccer program ended their 2019 season Nov. 9 with the Bald Eagles of Lock Haven edging the Mounties 2-1 on Saturday.

The final match saw seven seniors represent the Mounties one last time on the field and sidelines: Cay McNichol, Breanna Murphy, Jaiden DiPalma, Rachel Fox, Chelsea Thomas, Eleni Gebbia and Sierra Austin.

It was an intense and physical match right from the start with both teams finding chances throughout the first 30 minutes of play. The Bald Eagles were able to break open the scoreline first in the 35’ with Lock Haven’s Swartz beating the Mansfield defense far post. Five minutes later, a corner-kick ball rebounded out to an open Moritz to make it 2-0 in favor of Lock Haven.

After a brief halftime intermission, Mansfield came out pressing and put Lock Haven immediately on their heels.

With the momentum early in the second half, the Mounties were able to break the lead in-half after Murphy set a ball for McNichol 23 yards out, curling a shot upper-90 past the keeper in the 50’, her fifth goal of the season. The Mounties continued to find chances throughout the half, including two late free-kicks in the final few moments of the match. Ultimately, the Mounties could not find an equalizer, losing 2-1.

Stephanie Moir made several critical saves to keep the Mountaineers in the match from start to finish, registering 14 on the night.

Mansfield ended the match with 10 shots coming off the feet of McNichol (2), Murphy (2), Gebbia (2), Alyssa Mayberry (2), Carina O’Neill (1) and Koryn Reinhart (1).

The Mounties end their 2019 campaign with a 1-17 record.
