Friday night in East Juniata, the Wellsboro girls basketball season came to a heartbreaking end.

The Lady Hornets fought hard from the opening whistle.

After the first eight minutes the girls trailed by four points. In the second quarter Wellsboro limited East Juniata’s offense to keep the game close.

The score at the half was 15-11, with East Juniata leading.

The second half for Wellsboro was highlighted by a fourth quarter charge led by Emma Poirier and Heidi Zuchowski who combined for four three-pointers. Despite a 14-point fourth quarter the girls fell to 36-35 in the first round of district play.

Poirier finished the day with 11 points to lead Wellsboro.

Zuchowski had 10 points the loss.

Wellsboro will lose four seniors this offseason. Poirier the leading scorer for the Hornets and an overall leader will graduate this season. Coach Poirier is excited about the possibilities next season despite losing Poirier.

The young players that gained a lot of expereince this season will be big contributors next year when the Lady Hornets hope to make districts again.
