In the first round of district play the North Penn-Liberty Mounties took on the Griffins from Sullivan County. The Mounties closed out the regular season with a four game losing streak but were looking to reverse their fortunes against Sullivan County. Meanwhile, Sullivan County was carrying momentum into the playoffs after finishing the season with three big wins.
The Griffins knocked down four three-pointers in the first quarter, that, coupled with solid defensive play helped Sullivan County build a 10-point lead going into the second quarter.
The Griffins continued to play hard-nose defense in the second quarter which limited opportunities for the Mounties to score. Despite Sullivan County’s strength on defense, North Penn-Liberty capitalized on two three-point attempts by Colton Litzelman to outscore the Griffins 10-7 in the second. The Mounties still trailed 24-17 at the half.
After the halftime break, the Griffins built upon their seven-point lead with another 12 points in the third while holding North Penn-Liberty to just six points.
Sullivan County had held North Penn-Liberty to just 23 points through the first three quarters but that was about to change.
The Mounties offense played aggressively through the fourth quarter, scoring more points in the final eight minutes than in the first three quarters combined. Brandon Choplosky erupted for 14 points in the fourth. After scoring all six of the Mounties third quarter points, Noah Spencer knocked down five shots in the final quarter for 12 points. The Mounties scored 35 points in a dominant fourth quarter. After trailing by 13 points heading into the last quarter, the Mounties outscored Sullivan County by 12 points. In the end, though, the Griffins were able to weather the storm and take a 59-58 victory.
Choplosky and Spencer led the Mounties late game and each accounted for 18 total points in the season ending loss.
The Griffins were led by Jesse Williams with 16 points. Sam Carpenter added 13 for Sullivan County, who move on to the District IV Semifinals against Lourdes Regional.
