The Mansfield Destroyers traveled to Syracuse Wednesday, June 19, for a double header with the Saltcats.
The first half of the double header the Saltcats took an early 1-0 lead in the third when Xander Ferlenda scored from third base on a grounder to second.
The Saltcats extended their lead in the fifth with another run.
Eric Feliz scored for Mansfield in the sixth on a single from Anthony Brown but the Destroyers failed to put any more runs across the plate and fell 2-1.
In the second game, the Destroyers jumped ahead early with an RBI from both Matthew Williams and Tyler Melko in the first.
Mansfield tacked on a third run in the fourth before the Saltcats put their first run across the plate in the bottom half of the inning. The Destroyers werestill up by two runs after the fifth inning.
But the Saltcats avoided defeat with two runs in the sixth to knot the game at 3-3.
Neither team managed to score in the seventh, which forced an extra inning of play. Again, neither team scored in the eighth resulting in a 3-3 tie.
At home on Friday, June 21, the Destroyers put on an offensive clinic against the Genesee Rapids. Leading the charge was Melko with a 2-for-4 night at the plate with four RBIs.
Mason Vaughn started on the mound for Mansfield. After three innings of play, Vaughn had allowed just two hits while holding the Rapids scoreless. The Rapids only score of the night would come in the fourth when centerfielder Jayson Lee scored on an error.
The Destroyers responded in the bottom of the fourth with six runs on five hits to pull ahead 8-1. Mansfield picked up three more runs between the sixth and seventh innings to finish the night with an 11-1 home victory.
The Destroyers offense stayed hot the next day when they traveled to Niagara. This time, it was Williams who led the offense going 2-for-5 at the plate with two RBIs and two scores. The 7-4 victory was Mansfield’s eighth win of the season.
The win streak came to an end Sunday, when Mansfield dropped both halves of a double header with Hornell.
On the road on Monday, the Destroyers found their groove as they put up 13 runs against the Rapids. Jake Spillane had a strong outing on the mound for Mansfield as he allowed just one run in five innings and struck out nine.
On offense the Destroyers held the lead from the second inning onward. Blake Murray led Mansfield with three RBIs on a base-clearing double to right field in the sixth. The win against Genesee gave the Destroyers nine on the season and put them in second in the Western division behind Niagara Power.
The Destroyers returned to action Wednesday, June 26 for a double-header against Syracuse, the scores from these games will be in next week’s paper.
