Thursday night the North Penn-Liberty Lady Mounties faced off against the Wellsboro Lady Hornets for the third time this season this time for the Class AA District IV Championship at Williamson High School.
The Lady Mounties lead early but Wellsboro kept the game close trailing by only three 7-4. North Penn-Mansfield kept ticking away the points and pulled ahead 10-5. They would continue to lead for the entirety of the game. Wellsboro would struggle to close that gap and would eventually fall in the first game 25-14. North Penn-Mansfield controlled the tempo the first set and continued that momentum for the remaining two sets.
In the second set North Penn-Liberty again jumped out in front. Wellsboro fought to keep the game closer in the second set, closing to within two points in the middle of the set 11-9. North Penn-Liberty pulled ahead, before Wellsboro could mount a serious offensive attack. The Lady Mounties would hang on to win 25-19 in the second.
The third set was all North Penn-Liberty. The girls jumped out to an early lead and never looked back taking the final set 25-6.
The win handed the Lady Mounties the District Title for the third straight season.
In the first round of the PIAA State playoffs North Penn-Liberty would travel to Wilkes Barre where they would once again square off against Holy Redeemer. Holy Redeemer would take the first set 25-15. North Penn-Liberty battled back to win the second set by five points 25-20.
In a pivotal third set the Lady Mounties fought hard for each point.
In closing moments of the set the Lady Mounties led 22-20. Holy Redeemer would go on a run though to close out the set and earn a 22-25 win over the North Penn-Mansfield.
Holy Redeemer put the match away with a 25-15 third set to knock the Lady Mounties out of the State Playoffs.
Coach Holli Smith said, “These ladies had a great season and it’s been a great ride. Both teams (Varsity and JV) are an awesome group of young ladies with strong support at home from parents, grandparents and fans.”
North Penn-Liberty finishes the season with a 22-3 overall record.
Stats for the final game of the season were as follows: Brooke Harvey led the offense with four points, one ace, 14 kills, 18 receptions and 17 digs.
Savannah Doney led the defense with 3 points, 37 receptions, 12 digs and one assist.
JoAnne McNamara led in scoring with nine points, three aces, 1 kill, 20 assists and six digs.
Charisma Grega added six points, one ace, seven kills, 14 receptions, 17 digs and one assist.
Mariah Kshir was close behind with nine points, two aces, five kills, eight assists and one dig.
Ellianna Fry had three kills, four blocks and seven digs.
Maddison Minyo added four points, five kills, two blocks and two digs.
Ali Koval had three receptions and four digs.
