The Wellsboro Hornets boys soccer team opened up their season this past weekend with a second place finish in the Millville Tournament. In their first game of the season, the Hornets took their first win in an overtime period against the Jersey Shore team.

The game was scoreless through regulation play, and took an overtime period for the Hornets to settle this one. The Hornets out shot Jersey Shore 16-6 and lead in corner shots as well 6-2. The Hornets controlled the possession a lot of this game and according to coach Fitch and put forth an excellent effort for the entirety of the contest. Coach Fitch commented on his first game scoring struggles and said “we just could not get the ball across the line, between the posts. However, the boys kept grinding and in OT created another opportunity that finally produced the needed goal. “

Will Porrier ended up with the winning goal, scoring in the overtime period to give the Hornets a one point advantage and advance them to the next round of the tournament. Ethan Ryan had a productive first outing in the goal for Wellsboro, with five saves and not allowing a goal against Jersey Shore.

In the championship match of the tournament the Wellsboro Hornets were matched up against Millville, the PIAA class A state champs from the prior season. It was a tough matchup but the Hornets came out firing, scoring the first two goals of the contest scored by Joseph Grab, to put them up two scores on Millville. Though they started strong, Millville came back three of their own goals in order to bring the score to 3-2 going into the half.

After halftime Millville shut the Hornets out while scoring two more goals to close out the game 5-2. Even with the loss coach Fitch saying that opening the regular season against such a good team will be good for testing their level of play. Fitch also pointed to set pieces such as free kicks and corner kicks as areas for improvement moving into the season. The Hornets are set to play Athens on Sept. 4 in their first NTL action of the season.
