Through nine games, the Wellsboro Hornets volleyball team sit at 8-1 on the season suffering their first stumble of the season on Tuesday to North Penn-Liberty.
In their game last Thursday, the Hornets swept the Cowanesque Valley Indians by scores of 25-7, 25-20 and 25-13. Led by Caitlyn Callahan with 20 kills, the Hornets controlled the game from start to finish. Ryann Adams also had a strong performance as well coming up with with 12 digs, 13 points and three aces.
The balanced roster of the Hornets boasts a large number of players who are able to lead their team on any given night, which is a big part of why the Hornets have had such a great start, and sit near the top of the NTL standings.
On Saturday the Hornets took on the Athens Wildcats who came into the game with only one loss, were swept by the Hornets in convincing fashion. The Hornets were once again led by Caitlyn Callahan who recorded 19 kills, as well as Breighanna Kemp who recorded an stat-line of 19 assists, 11 points, four aces and 10 digs on the game. At this point, the Hornets sat at the top of the NTL large school division with an 8-0 record, with North Penn-Liberty close behind with a 6-0 start on a collision course for Tuesday night.
In the battle of undefeated teams, the Hornets took on the North Penn-Liberty team in matchup between the last two NTL teams with an undefeated record.
Both teams were looking to propel themselves to the top of the NTL standings with a win. In the first true test of the year the North Penn-Liberty team were able to take the win on the road, and give the Hornets their first loss.
Before Tuesday night the Hornets hadn’t lost a single set, but Liberty was able to sweep them in three. The Liberty team won sets 25-20, 25-6 and 25-21 giving them sole possession of first place in the NTL.
The Hornets will have one more shot to dethrone the undefeated top team Liberty when they get their chance at revenge on Oct. 17 on the road in Liberty.
The Hornets will look to get back to their winning ways as they take on the Troy Trojans volleyball team on the road Thursday, Sept. 26 at 7:30 p.m.
