The Galeton girls volleyball team traveled to Smethport on Tuesday, Sept. 15 and took home a 3-0 set sweep in a season-opening matchup against the Smethport Lady Hubbers.
After coming off an impressive 11-7 season in 2019, the Galeton girls return almost every key contributor this season and will look to improve on that mark this year.
The Galeton girls dominated throughout the evening, claiming double-digit victories in two of their three sets with scores of 25-8, 25-23 and 25-13.
Galeton was led by an outstanding all-around game by senior Alexis Johnson, who recorded a sound 12 kills, one block, two digs and three aces in the sweep. Fellow senior and team captain Makenna Shuemaker also had an impressive night on the court, stuffing the stat sheet with two kills, 10 assists, seven digs and one ace during the win.
Sophomore Alli Macensky picked up right where she left off in her freshman year as a force in the middle recording six kills and six digs to go along with one ace and Lauren Sauley also did a great job as a distributor, racking up 10 assists to go with her eight digs on the night.
With the season-opening win, Galeton got the opportunity to test their growth from 2019 to 2020 as they faced the perennial powerhouse Coudersport Lady Falcons.
Galeton not only won, but dominated the matchup, winning by three sets to just one and cementing themselves as a solid District Nine competitor.
In the win, Johnson continued her stellar play with 10 kills, one block, four digs and three aces. Rohrbaugh also was solid with six kills and six digs and Macensky once again showed off her prowess as a blocker with three blocks and also eight aces on the night.
Shuemaker dished out nine assists and recorded 11 digs and Sauley also had a strong game assisting, recording six two go along with nine digs.
Galeton will look to keep their hot-hand going as they travel to Shinglehouse on Thursday, Sept. 17 for a matchup with Oswayo Valley.
