Joseph Grab from the Wellsboro Hornets basketball team earned the honor of Tioga Publishing’s Player of the Year this season for his successful junior season that saw him lead a young Wellsboro team to an unlikely District playoff appearance.
“It means a lot,” said Grab on receiving the award. “I put a lot of work and effort into this season, not just for myself but also to help the team, so to be recognized as one of the best is truly a blessing.”
Grab was a player in 2020 given a new opportunity to lead and took full advantage of the chance by jumping from a seven point per game scorer in his sophomore year to 24 points per game this season and his improvement was one of the driving forces of Wellsboro putting together a respectable season even when many thought they might struggle.
“Some of the seniors leaving gave me a lot more opportunities,” Grab said. “I didn’t need to score as much with them and I just needed to move the ball around and make some scores.... Working out was not really like trouble for me because when you have something you love, you have fun doing it.”
After a breakout season in 2019-2020, look for Grab to take the next step as a senior as his laser focus on improving continues this offseason.
“Our coach wants us to go far, we thought we could’ve gone farther last year. So we plan on doing open gyms and I’ve been getting the guys going at the park to get some runs in,” Grab said.
