Fancy Paws of Wellsboro offers a new option for local dog owners who need their pooches prettied up.
Owner Jennifer Driscoll opened her full service dog grooming salon on Nov. 1, 2022 at 10305 Route 6 in Wellsboro. She is a professional dog groomer who also has a background in cosmetology.
“I think in a way they go together,” she said. “It all has to do with caring for people and animals and catering to them, making them feel comfortable.”
Driscoll is originally from mid-state Pennsylvania and saw “a major need up here” for a dog grooming business.
“Business is getting there,” Driscoll said. “I’m in a nice place where I can give each dog attention without hurrying to book back-to-back appointments.”
“Each dog is different. I’d rather they be comfortable and not rush.”
Driscoll works with dogs of all breeds and sizes. Fancy Paws will also groom cats, although Driscoll said, “They’re not my favorite, with their teeth and claws.”
The Fancy Paws facility is compact but complete, with an adjustable grooming table, a full sized adjustable bath tub, a heated floor and work tables stocked with conditioners, flea and tick treatments, and sprays and lotions. Driscoll offers a variety of shampoo choices ranging from moisturizing to whitening to shed control.
Each dog leaves Fancy Paws with a themed bandanna or ribbon. The bandannas are handmade by Driscoll’s mother.
Driscoll plans to expand the salon’s footprint by ten feet in the near future, which will allow for a drying room with kennels and box fans.
Currently, Driscoll grooms one dog at a time from start to finish, with the exception being dogs from the same household, whom she will groom together.
Fancy Paws’ a la carte services range from nail clipping to a full groom. Driscoll said she tries to avoid shaving dogs and prefers to carefully work through any mats.
“If clients want to learn a grooming regimen, I’ll work with them so they can learn,” she said.
She is also sympathetic to owners who are anxious when their dog is away from them
“I’ll text them and send pictures, to reassure them,” she said. “I’d want someone to do the same for me.”
Fancy Paws’ current hours are 6:30 a.m.-5 p.m., but Driscoll notes that she is very flexible.
“I’m a morning person, so if someone needs to drop their dog off very early, we can arrange that.”
Perhaps surprisingly, Driscoll does not currently own a dog; she has chickens, ducks and two cats.
“I get my doggie fix at work,” she said.
