The sudden appearance of PennDOT contractors on Main Street downtown early Friday morning came as a surprise for everyone, including borough council vice president Mike Wood.
Wood said Friday that council knew the seal coating work was to be done but didn’t know when.
“It I was being done to prepare the pavement for winter,” Wood said.
The sealing work was done except for the crosswalks and parking space lines, said borough manager Scot Boyce Wednesday.
Only police chief Jim Bodine was notified the work would be taking place, Boyce added.
During the paving, which was completed earlier this week, parking spaces on Main Street were blocked off Friday, which Wood called “the busiest shopping day of the week.”
“It’s good to see it getting done, but eliminating parking is a real inconvenience to shoppers and visitors to Wellsboro,” he said.
