Saturday, May 5, marked the first time in the last five years that Wellsboro sent two players to the PIAA District IV singles tournament.
Coach Marge Hoffman said, “Their results were the best Wellsboro has done in recent memory.”
Wellsboro’s Nate Redell was seeded fifth in the District IV boys singles tennis bracket. After a bye in the first round Redell faced Spencer Karasek and earned a two set victory, 6-2, 6-0.
Nate Redell then advanced to the quarter finals where he met the number four seed Dhruv Kotru. Kotru defeated Redell 6-4, 6-2 to advance to the semi final round.
Will Poirier was the second Wellsboro tennis player to qualify for the singles tournament. Poirier won his first round match against Loyalsock’s number one seeded player Conor Rude 6-1, 6-2, before falling to the number seven seed Conor Ryan, 0-6, 3-6, in the round of 16.
In the team semi finals on May 7, Wellsboro’s tennis season came to a close against Lewisburg.
Redell defeated Zach Higgins 6-1, 6-1.
Cole Temple defeated Poirier 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3
