The Wellsboro Hornets volleyball team opened up their season with an emphatic sweep over the Cowanesque Valley Indians on Friday, Sept. 11.
The Lady Hornets took three straight sets with scores of 25-17, 25-20 and 25-22 to take their first win of the season and were led by a balanced attack throughout.
Bailey Monks led the way on offense and was a force at the net, recording 10 kills to go along with two blocks on the night.
Breigh Kemp also had an outstanding performance, notching four kills, 17 points, four aces, 15 assists and one block in one of her best performances to date in a Hornets jersey.
Senior Shiloh Duff also put together a strong night adding eight kills and a block during the win. Kathryn Burnett led the defense with an impressive 15 dig game to round out the top performers for the Hornets.
Wellsboro despite losing a handful of key players who graduated, still have the look of a team that has a chance to compete for a District Title in 2020.
They will need some of their younger players as well as senior leadership to help them power through the season and attempt to match rival NP-Liberty if they meet again in the finals.
Both teams are back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 15 as the Lady Indians host Northeast Bradford at 6 p.m. and the Lady Hornets travel to Williamson for a sister-school showdown.
